PAT (Portable Appliance Testing) is a routine inspection and test of portable electrical equipment. This tests whether electrical equipment will function without the risk of giving the user a shock.
Does your business need PAT Testing?
If your answer is yes to any of the following then PAT Testing is required.
- Portable electrical appliances* are used at your business premises.
- 5 or more people are employed at your business.
- Health & Safety risk assessments are carried out at your business premises.
*A portable electrical appliance is any anything which you can move around and plug into an electrical socket e.g. computers, monitors, printers, kettles, microwave ovens, power leads.
It is recommended that PAT Testing is carried out every 6-12 months to minimise the risk of injury to employees.
The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 requires that all electrical equipment in non-residential premises is maintained. There is no legal requirement to have PAT undertaken in law however, as a duty of care to workers there is a legal responsibility to ensure workers are not exposed to risks of electric shock from poorly maintained appliances.
