What is a disabled refuge area?
It is a legal requirement under the ‘Disabled Discrimination Act (2004)’ that all non-domestic buildings with more than one level must provide some form of protection for disabled individuals within that building. This is a safe place away from the fire that is protected by some form of fire-resistant construction that will then enable the safe evacuation of the disabled person(s) from the building.
This applies to any person who cannot easily make use of fire escapes during a crisis.
CSS provides disabled refuge systems such as emergency voice communication (EVC) in the event that an individual cannot easily access a fire escape, lift or stairs in the event of an emergency.
Emergency Voice Communication from CSS
Under the ‘Regulatory Reform Order,’ for those individuals unable to escape the building, a refuge area must be provided as well as some form of two-way communication.
This enables emergency services or any other individual to communicate with the person(s) in the refuge area. Instructions can be given via the emergency voice communication system enabling a safe evacuation of the building for both the disabled person(s) and fire fighters. It allows effective, quick communication.
Emergency voice communication systems can be supplied and installed by CSS and are all compliant with ‘The Regulatory Reform Order.’
