Ciqurix Fire Detection for Recycling Centres

The client was a busy waste transfer station with high levels of airborne contaminants. The site was 20 acres in size, handling around 750,000 tonnes of domestic and commercial waste every year.

Challenge:

Storing and sorting unsorted mixed waste (multiple sources of heat) in a dusty atmosphere means the risk of fire starting is high. The client needed a way to rapidly detect fire with false activations.

❌  Smoke detectors were ineffective due to the centre’s high ceilings and airborne contaminants.

❌  Thermal temperature detection cameras did not meet the regulations and requirements of the insurers and Environment Agency, nor would the allowable trigger temperature be low enough for early detection.

Solution:

The site’s fire and security provider recommended the Ciqurix CORE video flame detection system, having used it previously.

✅  Rapid detection of real fire, not heat, dust, fumes or steam (all present in the waste management facility).

Ciqurix used the client’s building plan and measurements to model the space so that the installer could devise effective coverage and placement of detectors.

After installation, Ciqurix attended site to finalise commissioning of the system, which was certified to BS5839-1.

Results:

Installation of four XFP video flame detectors and a CORE Control Hub; this links to the site fire system and is monitored off-site.

A live video feed from each video detector can be accessed by site staff from their PCs and mobile devices.

Site management and staff are very happy with the system, which is performing well, and the insurer and Environment Agency are both satisfied with the steps taken to improve safety.
