Ian McGarry and Carly Sandhu, supported by donations from CSS, family and friends, conquer the Edinburgh Kiltwalk for Quarriers

In September 2024, Ian McGarry and Carly Sandhu of CSS raised hundreds of pounds for Quarriers by taking on the Edinburgh Kiltwalk in memory of their beloved uncle Brian, who spent the last weeks of his life in the exceptional care of staff at the William Quarrier Epilepsy Centre in Govan.

Despite the facility not being designed for end-of-life care, the team went above and beyond to ensure Brian’s comfort following his cancer diagnosis. They also provided invaluable support to Ian’s family. In a statement, Ian said:

We chose to do the Edinburgh Kiltwalk in memory of our uncle Brian. Brian spent his last weeks at the William Quarrier Epilepsy Centre in Govan.

He had been in a few months before for assessment on his life long epilepsy and that was the second stage of his assessment.

He had been having other health issues over a few months and during his second spell at Quarriers he had been diagnosed with cancer. All in, it was a rapid decline and he was only 6 weeks or so from diagnoses until he sadly passed.

The staff at the centre were first class with Brian and us as a family, he really couldn’t have asked for better care.

The staff could not do enough for us. A facility which is not designed for end-of-life care went above and beyond with the support they offered us.

The care and empathy was outstanding.

There was no push to move a Brian to hospice or more specialist care, they kept him comfortable, were great with us coming and going for visiting and even simple things like offering tea or coffee, you know where the kitchen is feel free to help yourself.

It was just comforting and relaxed at stressful time.

We wanted to do something to give a bit back to Quarriers as a thank you from the family.

Our page raised £800, but my work (CSS) have still to donate a further £250 so that will take us over the £1,000 mark + gift aid.

Well done, Ian and Carly. Your determination to support this meaningful cause is a wonderful tribute to your uncle Brian, and will help many people supported by Quarriers.
