Identifying and Preventing Shoplifting
Retail Security FAQ: Preventing Shoplifting to Protect your Business
A visible deterrent can significantly reduce the likelihood of theft. Visible deterrents such as security cameras, security tags and security staff can discourage potential shoplifters from attempting theft.
Potential shoplifters are less likely to steal if they believe they are being watched. This can prevent theft before it happens.
Security systems such as cameras and security tags can help in the immediate detection of theft attempts. When shoplifters see these deterrents, they are more likely to abandon their plans for fear of being caught on the spot.
Consistent and visible security measures can deter repeat offenders. If shoplifters know that your retail store has stringent security measures, they are less likely to target your store in future.
Visible deterrents also contribute to the safety of both staff and customers. Confrontations with shoplifters can be dangerous, and preventing these situations improves your in-store environment.
A 2010 study by the University of Leicester suggests shoplifters may be young males with anti-social tendencies. Interestingly, the research also found younger, outgoing people are more prone to minor thefts.
Other potential characteristics:
- Age: Studies suggest younger people might be more likely to shoplift.
- Impulsivity: Some shoplifters may steal due to difficulty controlling urges.
- Economic hardship: While not always the case, financial difficulties can be a motivator.
Important to note:
- These are just potential characteristics, not guarantees.
- Shoplifting is a complex issue with various contributing factors.
- Profiling individuals based on these characteristics can be inaccurate and even discriminatory.
If you’re concerned about potential shoplifting in your store, it’s best to focus on security measures and prevention strategies, not profiling customers. Talk to CSS for advice on preventing shoplifting and improving security at your retail business.
While these behaviours don’t guarantee someone is shoplifting, they can be cause for awareness. The Met Police have listed some signs to watch for:
Focus on Staff, Not Products: Customers who seem to be observing staff more than browsing items might be waiting for an opportunity.
Distracting Conversations: Be wary of chatty shoppers who seem overly interested in your attention, potentially to create a diversion for an accomplice.
Disinterest in Products: Customers who handle items carelessly or show minimal interest could be concealing them.
Nervousness and Random Picks: Customers who seem on edge and pick up random items with no apparent purpose might be planning to steal.
Refusing Help: Customers who persistently decline assistance might be trying to avoid detection.
Frequent Visits, No Purchases: Customers who visit often but never buy anything could be casing the store.
Cabinet Access Requests: Customers who insist you unlock cabinets for them but don’t make a purchase might have ulterior motives.
Remember: It’s important to be observant without accusing innocent customers. If you suspect shoplifting, discreetly notify a supervisor and let them handle the situation.
Over the last two years, it has been reported that thieves are targeting both high-value agricultural equipment and essential items like medicine and baby formula. While expensive machinery saw a significant increase in thefts, according to the Ross-shire Journal, shoplifting of everyday necessities is rising in areas with high poverty rates. This surge in shoplifting is attributed to a combination of desperation and the black-market value of these products, particularly baby formula, as reported in iNews.
