Sheds and garages are often and afterthought, here are a few tips for keeping them safe and secure.

When it comes to protecting your home, we encourage our customers to think about their property as whole, rather than the house alone. This includes thinking about what’s outside, including their garden shed and garage. You’d be surprised by how many people look this over. The thing is, even though it’s outside, you still keep valuable goods in these places – power tools, golf clubs, even your car; so why not protect them in the same way you do your house? Here are a few of our top tips for protecting your shed, garage or outhouse.

• Site your shed or garage as close to your home as possible, if it’s all the way down the end of the garden, burglars will be more likely to attempt a break in.
• It’s a simple one, but make sure to lock your shed and garage after use.
• If possible, keep valuables in the house rather than the garden shed.
• If you have an alarm fitted, consider extending it to your shed and garage.
• Keep keys in a safe place upstairs – a lot of thieves are now fishing keys from hallway tables through the letter box, especially car keys.
