A Fond Farewell to Casper AKA Buster, CSS Superdog
It is with a heavy heart to let you know that our wee family pet “Casper, the friendly dog” was put to sleep last week.
It has taken some time for me to come to terms with her loss, not only our family but to our businesses people and community too. You see, Casper was the inspiration for our businesses branding and marketing campaigns over many years.
Her name was inspired by Casper the Friendly Ghost who baby boomers from 1960s will remember from the Glen Michael Cartoon Cavalcade shows. She, like the ghost, was snow white as a puppy when we picked her up from Mr Walkinshaw, her breeder from Peebles in the Scottish borders. We met her mum, aunt, and several other direct line relatives the day we visited, and she was the runt of the litter. My daughter Larissa, seven years old at the time, picked her out of a large cardboard box in Mr Walkinshaw’s front room.
For the next sixteen years she brought us untold joy and happiness like most four-legged pets do for their owners. I came up with the idea of superdog, a sort of crime fighter branding to promote CSS and to this day it’s been a success for us. It’s the one main thing people keep asking “how’s superdog?” I jumped on the idea after seeing the movers and shakers of the advertising world using animals to promote their clients’ businesses e.g. Meerkats, Bulldogs, Cats, etc; a gimmick that people could connect with and a subliminal message of CSS behind her, promoting a feeling of being secure.
Our wee West Highland Terrier succumbed to the type of conditions that we humans succumb to as we head toward the exit door in God’s waiting room. The vet said she was a very, very old lady and she was ready to leave us and head off to the happy hunting ground as they say.
We will continue to promote our business via Casper in her memory simply because we had a lot of fun with our partner companies in coming up with fun promotions with a serious message to them. Thank you for all of the kindness expressed to the Connellys as anyone that has had the pleasure of having a dog knows they do become part of the family and are sorely missed.
