Child Safety Tips for Child Safety Week
It’s CAPT’s Child Safety Week! Here are a few hints and tips for keeping the wee ones safe…
When you become a parent, you have to grow eyes at the back of your head. One minute the wee one could be happily playing with his toys, the next – he’s off! For that reason, it’s so important to make sure your home is as safe and child-proof as possible. This week marks Child Safety Week – an annual campaign set up by the Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT) as a way to raise awareness of the risks of child accidents and how they can be prevented. This year’s theme is “Teatime Terrors” and is about how dinner time can be like one giant balancing act for parents – your attention can be spread across a multitude of tasks, meaning there’s more risk of accidents happening. CAPT also provide loads of brilliant hints and tips to make tea time a lot less stressful. Here are a few of the top tips:
Keep pots and kettles to the back of the hob
Young children don’t have a reflex to pull away from something that is burning them, it’s something we learn. Push kettles to the back of the worktop and try to use the back rings on the hob. Better still, keep children out of the kitchen when you’re cooking.
Test their bath water
Did you know bath water can cause a serious scald in just 5 seconds? Put the cold water in first and top up with hot, in case your toddler takes a tumble into the bath.
Store liquitabs away from children
The bright colours and squidgy texture appeal to kids because they think they’re sweeties.Safety caps and lids slow children down but don’t rely on them – it takes just seconds for some three or four year olds to open them.
