CSS Environmental Efforts 2024: Planting Trees and Supporting Global Projects
From Trees to Electric Cars: the CSS Environmental Impact Reduction Plan in Action
As part of our duty of care for our future generations, we have invested further with CSS environmental partner Ecologi. Very recently the businesses of Connelly Group Holdings have supported a range of important environmental projects.
We planted an additional 5000 trees, taking our tree planting so far to 10,122 across ten global projects. Also, we are supporting four verified projects in Thailand, Brazil, Indonesia and Kenya with these amazing results:
- 200 tonnes of carbon avoidance
- 100 tonnes of renewable energy carbon avoidance
- 100 tonnes of community based carbon avoidance.
We find greater value in investing in overseas projects where each pound goes further. For instance, planting a tree in the UK costs around £5, whereas overseas we can plant a tree for just 60p, allowing us to plant nearly ten times as many trees in developing regions.
Eco-Conscious Business Practices
Closer to home, we have now installed electric car charging points at Glasgow HQ and our Stirling branch for company car drivers. We continue to invest in our fleet of vehicles that are more environmentally friendly over previous models. Our investment has taken over sixty older vehicles out of our fleet. In addition, we have scrapped six vehicles that did not meet the new Glasgow LEZ requirements. It is our understanding the LEZ policy will expand to other Scottish towns and cities.
Finally, this is our first year in consciously taking serious responsibility as a business in trying to do our bit to reduce our impact on climate change and we’re committed to funding projects in the years ahead.
We’ve implemented higher productivity targets for our field-based engineers to maximise on-site time over travel. Focusing on specific postcode areas, like G3 or Eh1, allows for increased work efficiency and reduced travel. Previously, engineers spent almost half their time driving, but with recent technological advances, this ratio has significantly improved, leading to a notable reduction in our vehicle emissions.
The philosophy of our business is to make small changes, and these changes, coupled with other like-minded people and business, may in the long run stop our people and our planet dying prematurely because of man’s unwillingness to get involved as if its someone else’s problem. We’re stepping up the challenge as best we can and hope to inspire others to do the same.
