Our favourite family days out: great attractions to go to with Kids
Here are a few of our favourite places and family days out to explore in Scotland.
A little inspiration goes a long way, and when it comes to the weekend (or even the summer holidays) you want to make sure the family aren’t spending all of their time in front of the television. The weather might not always be great here in Scotland, but we’re really lucky to have lots of places to explore right on our doorstep.
As a family business, we like to find places where can spend time together and have fun. So we’ve put together a few of our favourite family attractions to give you some inspiration for your next big family day out.
The Riverside Museum, Glasgow
The Riverside Museum is essentially the new Transport Museum, and so much more. It’s home to some of the world’s finest cars, trains and bicycles and even has a recreation of a 1900’s street. What’s more, it’s FREE (with the option of a donation in the box at the front door). A must-visit.
Millport, Isle of Cumbrae
Sometimes known as “the isle of a thousand bicycles”, Millport is famous for – you guessed it – cycling.
Every year, especially in summer, families hop on the ferry from Largs and head over to Millport (it’s only 10 minutes on the boat) for a day out. There are options to hire bicycles, or bring your own – either way, it’s a great way to get the family out and about and to take in the beautiful views around every corner.
Dynamic Earth, Edinburgh
Dynamic Earth is a must-visit for the curious: a 5-star visitor experience that tells the story of our planet.
From the oldest volcanos to the Amazon Rainforest, Dynamic Earth covers it all. They also offer fantastic educational programmes and community engagement initiatives. There are also free Community Discovery Passes that people can apply for if certain conditions are met, helping make this world-class attraction more accessible to those who need it most.
Gourock Outdoor Pool, Inverclyde
Before you laugh at the idea of an outdoor pool in Scotland, bear with us. The Gourock Pool is about 40 minutes down the road from Glasgow and recently underwent a £1.8 million refurbishment. Back when it first opened in 1909, the pool was simply water scooped from the River Clyde, but now it is warm and clean with absolutely no sand – a perfect day out in the sunshine.
Blair Drummond Safari Park, Stirling
If you’ve ever dreamt of seeing an African elephant or tigers and giraffes – you don’t need to cross continents: The Blair Drummond Safari Park in Stirling is right here on your doorstep. Meet some of the animals, play in the park and take a spin on the pedal boats – there are loads of attractions for the whole family to enjoy.
